Sometime back in 2009ish?, I found myself asking Dr. Google how to improve flexibility for martial arts. And that’s what led me into yoga.
My first class was NOT what I was expecting…
I mean I thought we’d just do a bit of stretching and call it a day.
Stepping into what felt like a sauna, I felt I was wrung out like a rag. With all of the lunging, twisting, folding, and opening – sweat was pouring out of me in buckets.
Laying on the mat after, I felt incredible. Definitely energized. And my mind felt clear. The stress of my day had just washed away.
Thought to myself,
“This is incredible. And I need to do more of it.”
Why Everyone Should Do Yoga
Fast forward a small handful of years, and I would experience the physical, mental, and emotional pain of tearing my ACL in half. Yeah that sucked (but we’ll save that story for another time)...
But I will say this, though:
That experience scared the crap outta me.
A couple of weeks spent on the couch immobilized, in an Oxycodone haze, was enough to kickstart some action.
So I took my physiotherapy seriously.
That’s when I realized it: I’d better take care of my body. Especially healing it and strengthening the muscles protecting my joints.
What I discovered, however… Was SO much more…
Why Built By Yoga?
As I began practicing yoga, I was noticing how certain poses or movements could help me based on my body’s needs. And could assist for other lifestyle activities.
For example, pigeon pose would be helpful for opening up my hips (great for jiu-jitsu). And following up some deadlifts, a Reclining Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose is a good way to stretch your hamstrings. And alleviate lower back tension.
Years later, many friends from who are athletes, martial artists, weightlifters, and bodybuilders started noticing and would ask questions:
- “What the hell have you been doing for such muscular control?”
- “How can I become more flexible?”
- “How do I get that kind of Range of Motion!?”
- “These hamstrings are locked tight! Give me some stretches to help!”
I’d tell them I’ve been doing yoga! And that they should get into it.
Most often, they would proceed to tell me about how “that stuff is too woo-woo” for them. Or they don’t resonate with the teachers talking about things like chakras or bandhas.
Built By Yoga is Different
Built By Yoga exists to help you move your body. To provide a modern, holistic approach to your fitness, health, and wellness. So you can develop strength and flexibility in your body. And wash away some of that stress you deal with.
Rest assured, I am not here to sell you essential oils or teach Sanskrit. And I don’t care whether you are vegan, or enjoy eating an 8oz Sirloin. I’m just going to push you through physical classes and workouts.
Baptiste said something about taking Yoga down from its spiritual mountain top and making it more accessible for all.
I thought that was cool. That’s kinda what I’m doing.
