Let’s back it up a bit…
I’m Jason, creator of Built By Yoga.
Before I fill you in on why I didn’t want to be a yoga teacher, there is something else you should know about me…
First, is that I have a strong dislike for Ranch Dressing. To me, it tastes like they were trying to replicate the smell of dirty feet. Also dislike mustard. That ugly yellow condiment can stay away from my tastebuds.
Super cool with Yoga, though!
You ever get into it?
If you haven’t, you prob’ly should.
Got a few classes you can try out on the YouTube channel. (PSSSt – go there now and subscribe for new videos).
Now as I said, I wasn’t interested in becoming a ‘yoga teacher’.
I don’t know. I guess I always felt like a ‘Misfit’. Because I was never the ‘spiritually-awakened guru’ type that most people imagine. I felt I couldn’t teach without fully embracing yoga as it is “meant” to be practiced.
Getting Over My Own Preconceptions
I felt I could never be this ‘enlightened guru’ I had thought I needed to be. So I never wanted to get into teaching. Why teach yoga when I constantly hear comments like ‘that’s not yoga!’ if and when I share my practice?
However, over the years, people kept asking questions about yoga with interest in ways it might help them. Questions like:
- “What yoga poses can I use for my hips?”
- “I can’t even touch my toes, what should I do?”
- “Do you have a good routine for weightlifters?”
- “I run every other day, what stretches can I do after?”
A whole smorgasbord of these types of questions started appearing in front of me.
And what I realized, is that there are a lot of ‘regular’ folks who would LOVE to get into yoga. They just feel it’s too ‘woo-woo’ for them. Or they’re intimidated about having to be some sort of spiritual guru (that’s me) or pretzel to do it.
Pfff. Nonsense! You just need an open mind and willingness to give it a go. Do yoga! Get into it! Yes! You should!
These questions started coming up more frequently. Surprising even more was hearing from people I would have never imagined getting into yoga. In fact, I grew up in small town rural Alberta. A province rich in passionate conservatives with Oil and Gas bumper stickers on absurdly large trucks.
I jokingly call half of my friends rednecks. But they’ll proudly identify with it. Which makes it even more surprising when I hear from someone I would never think would get into it. Telling me they were inspired by what I was sharing with it!
“Well Fuck. I guess maybe I should consider teaching yoga…“
Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.John Maxwell
What I began to realize, was that I didn’t need to put myself into some box. In fact I can and should carve out my own path. And help others the way I feek like expressing my lessons.
Which is exactly why I started Built By Yoga. Because I wanted to do things a little bit differently.
Truth is, the asana practice (that’s the physical part of yoga) is one of the most powerful movement systems on the planet.
In fact, Yoga is full of squats, lunges, and pushing exercises and very dynamic movements through your body’s ranges of motion. A sequence of asanas creates multi-joint, compound exercises. This makes for powerful functional workouts that challenge your body to its limits – getting you stronger and fitter for everyday life!
Anyone and everyone can benefit through this low impact fitness system.
BBY is a fitness system inspired by yoga asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing) and its methodologies. But we include more modern exercise physiology and biomechanics as well.
The result is a unique blend of yoga, calisthenics, and movements for more enhanced strength and mobility outcomes!
How To Get Started
Practicing Yoga has helped me tremendously. In body and mind. And I know it can help you too.
I didn’t want to talk a whole lot about myself in this about page. But if you must know more, I have been a practitioner of yoga (multiple styles, mostly power Vinyasa) for over a decade. I am a 200hr Rocket Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, and was a NASM-CPT, before I got out of the personal training.
I also love creating. The creative process is something that excites me and I never want to stop engaging in it. I love dreaming up ideas, and sharing ideas from my own experiences in ways that can help others.
(hence this website, which I have worked so hard on putting out into the world).
Anyways, maybe I’ll share more about me later. In the meantime, go ahead and take a look around the website.
Also, don’t forget to enrol in my (100% free) 30-day yoga challenge! It’s your best way to start practicing with me. You will get 30-days of yoga classes (I try to keep them around 30-minutes in length) to get you going. I will also send you daily reminder emails and more from me personally.
Finally, if you want a truly transformative experience, you can enrol in the BBY Academy. This is where you can find additional training materials and programs.
Wherever you end up, I hope to see you around. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.
