What is up guys?
So a little while ago I threw a yoga for bodybuilders class on the r/bodybuilding subreddit thinking two things:
1) It quite possibly will be shit on, or
2) Maybe some friends in swol would keep an open mind and try it out.
Due to the latter, I decided to post it.
Well the class was very well received (until the mod gods decided it wasn’t bodybuilder sufficient enough ffs). A lot of people were saying they were also finding the benefits of including yoga around their workout routine. Which is exactly what I found myself.
Now I know Yoga gives the sentiment of some ‘woo-woo’ thing granola sniffing hippies do. But hear me out…
Because through my years of working out, one thing I have noticed that is MASSIVELY underrated is flexibility. All of my jacked bodybuilder and powerlifter friends have strength for days. But a lot of em complain about things like tight hamstrings, lower back pain, etc. And move like they’re 50 years their senior.
Not all of them, mind you. BUT if I had to put money on it – I’d bet that not even a single one of my bros in swol could even touch their damn toes! I always tell these assholes they need to stretch. Or get into yoga. Funny thing is they know it would help them, too.
I like what Laird Hamilton said on Tim Ferriss’s podcast (which was quoted in his Tools of Titans book):
“All you flexible people should go bang some iron, and all you big weightlifters should go do some yoga”@lairdhamiltonsurf
See, I used to be highly inflexible myself. UNTIL I got into this funky thing called yoga… and many years later I move better than I ever have in my life.
I swear… It’s like I’ve got the Benjamin Button going on. Reversing in age. Which doesn’t make any sense after having beaten the shit out of my body throughout my life. Including multiple injuries (ACL surgery; broken wrist; complete ATFL and calcaneofibular ligament (say that one 10x fast), and a tweaked right shoulder).
So when my perfectly fit and should be functional friends come at me with “wahhhh my back hurts… wahhh my knee this…. wahhh my ankle… my body is fuked… wahhh….”
I offer the suggestion of incorporating a regular yoga practice. Keep an open mind about it. And just see what it can do for you!
Telling you, straight up: Yoga is like the fountain of youth. So I hope you like this Yoga for Bodybuilders class. Hopefully, you can use it so you can get a little more bendy and iron out the ‘kinks’ that are affecting your day to day movement.
